NRNA Delegates Urge Timely Conduct of Unity Convention Without Postponement

Kathmandu – Delegates who have arrived in Kathmandu to participate in the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) Unity Convention have urged the organizers to hold the convention on the scheduled dates without any postponement.

The high-level committee formed under the directive of the Supreme Court has called the Unity Convention from May 3 to 5, 2025 (Baisakh 20–22), with only four days remaining. During a meeting held Monday evening at the Nepal House Cafe in Baluwatar, delegates unanimously expressed that postponing the convention is now practically impossible.

NRNA activist Gunaraj Sharma (Gurans Paudel) from Switzerland said that many delegates had taken leave from work, purchased expensive tickets, and traveled to Kathmandu to resolve long-standing disputes in the organization. “The convention must not be postponed under any circumstances. All parties must come together to make this a true Unity Convention,” he said.

Similarly, Shashi Paudyal, founding president of NRNA Netherlands, emphasized that all NRNs must participate in the legitimate convention and elect a strong, capable, and consensus-based executive committee.

Bishwasdeep Tigela, a delegate from the UK, stressed that they came to support the rule of law, not individuals. “NRNA belongs to all of us. We bought costly tickets to be here; now it’s time to either reconcile or conclude the matter. We can no longer remain stuck in confusion,” he said.

Prem Gaha Magar, newly elected president of NRNA UK and a former Gurkha soldier, stated that unity within NRNA would help address numerous issues, including those related to Gurkha soldiers. He accused certain vested groups of turning the organization into a personal gain platform and urged everyone to work together.

Rajendra Kumar (R.K.) Sharma, a successful businessman and NRNA activist based in Qatar, said that the Unity Convention must be held as per the Supreme Court’s order and that the government also shares responsibility for ensuring it proceeds.

Mahesh Kumar Shrestha, a businessman and NRNA activist from Japan, stressed that postponing the convention would be unjust to everyone and proposed forming a judicial body within NRNA to resolve minor disputes internally instead of seeking court interventions.

Dr. Keshav Paudel, former president of NRNA America, highlighted that hundreds of activists from North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia have already arrived in Kathmandu, with more on the way. He said that after electing new leadership through the Unity Convention, the focus should shift toward resolving issues like NRN citizenship, labor rights, Gurkha matters, and investment promotion.

Similarly, activist Thark Sen from the UK reminded everyone that NRNA is a voluntary organization and urged all members to seize the opportunity provided by the judiciary to unite and move forward with integrity.

Khagendra Neupane, a long-time businessman in Malaysia, expressed confidence that the Unity Convention would be completed on time and called on all fellow delegates to participate actively.

Other activists, including Yogen Chhetri (UK), D.B. Chhetri (Oman), Ashish Pant (Qatar), Govinda Shrestha (Japan), Chintamani Sapkota (Spain), Bhim Bahadur Gurung (Singapore), Raj Kumar Bhujel (Cambodia), and Manoj Gorkhali (UAE), also spoke during the program. They emphasized respecting the Supreme Court’s directive, completing the convention on schedule, and sending a strong message of unity to NRNs worldwide. They criticized the use of membership fees for legal disputes and appealed for everyone to join hands for a successful convention.

According to the committee, nearly 3,200 delegates have already applied for participation, and the first phase of the voters’ list has been published by the Election Committee.
