Kathmandu — The Nepali film ‘Jaar’, based on a historical story rooted in Nepal’s social fabric, is all set to hit theaters across the country starting May 9 (Baisakh 26). According to the production team, ‘Jaar’ offers a unique subject and presentation that distinguishes it from typical films.
The movie is inspired by real events from the 1800s in Nepali society. It is based on a historical story written by renowned literary figure Indra Bahadur Rai. Director Phurba Tshering Lama explained that the film revives fading traditions and social bonds of that era, offering a glimpse into Nepal’s rich history.
Speaking about the movie, Lama shared, “This story has lingered in my mind since childhood. Whether in Nepal or among Nepali-speaking communities elsewhere, the emotions reflected in this story remain the same. ‘Jaar’ portrays the lived experiences, innocence, and cultural traditions like the ‘Miteri Saino’ (bond of friendship) that once thrived.”
Through a poignant love story, ‘Jaar’ explores the rigid social structure, relationships, and emotional complexity of that time. Viewers will witness the realities of love, relationships, and societal constraints through the characters ‘Thuli’ and ‘Rudraman’. Lama believes that while the topic may be unfamiliar to today’s generation, the film will reconnect audiences with a deeply rooted part of their cultural and emotional heritage.
Produced by Feri Tail Pictures, ‘Jaar’ stars Saugat Malla, Anup Bikram Shahi, and Geetanjali Thapa in lead roles. The film was shot in Sikkim to authentically capture the historical setting.
The executive producers of ‘Jaar’ include Trilochan Pandey, Neeraj Rai, Nursang Bhutia, Jyoti Chhetri, and Pema Rinzing Lepcha. The cinematography is by Saravanan Elavarasu, editing by Akhilesh Rai, and music composed by Jhuma Limbu and Ganga Thapa.
The production team confirmed that ‘Jaar’ will be released simultaneously in Nepal, India, and international markets. In Nepal, the film will be distributed by Apple Entertainment, Reach Entertainment, and FD Company, while international distribution will be handled by Seven Seas Cinema.
