Patients visiting hospitals should not be returned without treatment: Health Minister

Minister for Health and Population, Bhawani Prasad Khapung, has said patients visiting government hospitals should not be returned without treatment.Addressing a programme organised here today on the occasion of 133rd anniversary of Bir Hospital, Minister Khapung shared, “What does a patient visiting a government hospital for treatment service feel if he/she has to return home without treatment?”

He further said that the patients visiting Bir Hospital for treatment have no other hospitals to go and treatment should be carried out by making alternative arrangement even if all beds are packed.
Government hospitals should provide quality health services as people have great trust towards these hospitals, said Minister Khapung.

Lauding the role played by Bir Hospital during COVID-19, he pointed out that the hospital should pay attention in providing further quality health services in future. The Health Minister urged the bodies concerned to pay attention in cleanliness of the Bir Hospital.

Similarly, Minister of State at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Umesh Shrestha, laid emphasis on the need of making health services qualitative and service-oriented. Likewise, member of the National Planning Commission, Uma Shankar Prasad, opined that though the health sector index has made progress, people still do not have good access to health services. Administrative and legal obstacles would be removed by calling an assembly of National Academy for Medical Sciences, he mentioned.

Health Secretary Dr Roshan Pokharel stressed that the Bir Hospital should provide quality and specialized service, pointing out the need of providing trustworthy and quality services in order to make people’s life healthy.
The Hospital had carried out treatment of 433,108 patients in the last fiscal year, said officiating Chief Administrative Officer of the Hospital, Prof Dr Bhupandra Kumar Basnet.

The Bir Hospital has now been providing services from different out-patient departments including 42-bed emergency department, 68-bed ICU, 50-bed high dependency unit and 10-bed CCU, said Registrar of the Academy, Pramila Dewan.
