Kathmandu, Sept 25: Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Bishnu Poudel, has said innovative solutions are pressing needs in our transport system. It is also directly linked to our pledges on sustainable development goals, he added.DPM Poudel said it while addressing the ‘Global Sustainable Transport Forum 2024’ organized in Beijing, China on Wednesday. The theme of the event was ‘Sustainable Transport: Logistics Connecting the World’.
“Access to affordable and efficient transportation is critical. Our transport sector plays a vital role in connecting communities, fostering economic growth, and enhancing the quality of life for our citizens. Developing a sustainable transport system serves multiple purposes: it connects distant places, provides mobility for underserved populations, improves road safety, and mitigates environmental impacts,” he reminded.
The DPM also shared Nepal’s experiences and initiatives around the theme. He informed that Nepal was dedicated to establishing a sustainable and reliable transport system across the country. “We are expanding our road network each year, including both national highways and rural access roads, while also prioritizing air and rail connectivity,” he stated.
According to him, as a landlocked country, robust air and ground transport systems are fundamental for the development of Nepal. “However, we recognize that the transport infrastructure gap remains a significant barrier to unlocking our economic potential and attracting private investment. In a rapidly growing global landscape, efficient transport infrastructure is a key determinant of competitiveness especially for a landlocked country like Nepal.”Moreover, Poudel stated that Nepal was making significant progress in expanding road network by overcoming various challenges. Increasing urban congestion is affecting productivity and quality of life, he stressed.
“Like many countries, Nepal is witnessing a rapid increase in vehicle ownership, which is outpacing population growth. Consequently, we are experiencing rising transport-related carbon emissions, a challenge that is widespread across developing countries,” he expressed.
He highlighted that Nepal had achieved remarkable progress in transitioning from non-electric to electric vehicles, supported by government tax subsidy policies. Currently, approximately 75 percent of Nepal’s four-wheeler imports are electric vehicles, a significant rise from less than 10 five years ago. This shift not only aligns with our commitment to sustainability but also demonstrates our potential to adapt and innovate technology in the transport sector, Poudel stated during the address.
He also underlined the need to ensure connectivity and accessibility to the rural areas that need huge investments in infrastructure and creative solutions to overcome geographical barriers. Upgrade of transport systems, enhancement of the quality and safety of roads, reduction of urban congestion warrant constructions of highways and flyovers.
Similarly, the DPM spoke on the need of sustainability of infrastructure development, green transportation modes, focusing on three key areas: strengthening transport governance and emergency response, fostering inclusive rural transport, and promoting the transition to green energy.
He sought cooperation in governance and emergency response with the collaboration among nations that helps build resilience. Fair and inclusive rural transport system also draw equal attention, while investment in rural infrastructure connects communities, stimulates economic growth, and empowers individuals, the DPM argued.Collaboration among governments, the private sector, and communities is essential to realize it. “Let us remember that sustainable transport is not only an option; it is a necessity,” he reminded.
As he shared the promotion of new energy development was essential for boosting the green and low-carbon transition of global transport where innovative technologies and renewable energy sources play role in reducing our carbon footprint and lay the foundations for a cleaner and healthier planet.DPM Poudel sought all sides’ commitment to a future where sustainable transport is not just an aspiration, but a tangible reality for all.
