Chief Minister of Gandaki Province, Krishna Chandra Nepali Pokharel has said that the role of the Election Commission would be crucial to make the election free and transparent. Inaugurating a programme ‘Improvement in election system’ organized by Policy Research Institute with the coordination of Election Commission Nepal and collaboration of Nepal Law Campus at Pokhara today, Chief Minister Pokharel opined that democracy would be strong if the election is conducted in a free and transparent manner.
He mentioned that it was indispensable to make the election economical so general people could be candidate in the election, saying election is being so costly in Nepal. Stressing the need of making the Commission rich in means and resources for its effectiveness, CM Pokharel pointed out the need of making the election system efficient, smooth and effective by political parties as the existing election system has increased political instability.
Similarly, Minister with Portfolio of Gandaki Province, Dobate Bishwokarma, said that people from backward and marginalized community has got position due to inclusive and proportional representation. Executive Chair of the Policy Research Institute, Dr Bishnu Raj Upreti, shared that the Institute would collect the feedback and suggestion of the problems seen in existing election system and would recommend the bodies concerned. Likewise, former Election Commissioner, Nil Kantha Upreti, expressed the view that both–political parties and EC should be responsible to make the election economical.
Saying not only the election conducted by EC, but the internal election of the parties is becoming costly, representatives of Province-based political parties pointed out that the EC should pay attention in this regard.On the occasion, the speakers had suggested to use electronic voting and making arrangement for participation of Nepali living in abroad in voting process.
Top leaders and representatives of different political parties, province assembly members, government officers, media persons, security personnel and representatives of civil society were present.
