Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security, Kisan Shrestha, has expressed commitment to resolve problems faced by freed kamaiyas, haliyas and landless squatters. At an interaction organised by different organisations including Agriculture-related Bonded Labour Rights Forum, Kamaiya Women Awareness Society Nepal, and National Dalit Network here Wednesday, Minister Shrestha shared that minimum remuneration of freed kamaiyas would be determined and brought into implementation.

He opined, “Although the state has declared haliya free society time and again, it has not been brought into implementation effectively. Arrangement of employment along with skill-oriented training would be ensured to them. Details of those missed to be included in the list would be collected.” The Labour Minister assured of taking possible initiative for the management of budget focusing freed kamalaris and haliyas, among others.

Similarly, CPN (UML) leader Shanta Chaudhari, laid emphasis that the government should find out long-tern solution to these problems by formulating laws. “Kamalaris have been freed in law, they have not been freed yet in practice,” she observed. Likewise, a member of the House of Representatives, Nira Devi Jairu, stressed that the government should ensure arrangement of appropriate wages to labour.
